Rye Elementary Library

Once upon a time...

Rye Elementary's K-4 Library/Media program aims to bring books to life through the use of puppets, costumes and props. The curriculum evolves from cultivating literature appreciation, listening skills, and personal responsibility through book care, to setting a foundation for digital citizenship and Internet safety, as well as writing and research skills. By grade 4, we work to build awareness around critical media analysis. The National Association for Media Literacy Education defines media literacy as the ability to access, analyze, evaluate, create, and act using all forms of communication responsibly. Media literacy education emphasizes skills of inquiry and expression and empowers students to think critically, communicate effectively, and engage as active citizens.

Students will also focus on author studies, art awareness through children's book illustrations, local history, stewardship and more. In the process, we hope to spark imaginations and instill a lifelong love of reading.

Students in the Library rotation will be asked to check out a book to read for enjoyment and show personal responsibility by taking care of it and either returning or renewing it a week later. When students have overdue books, they can not take out another book until the overdue ones are returned.

The library has over 10,000 pieces of media, which can be previewed by clicking HERE

RES Lost or Damaged Book Policy

RES Lost or Damaged Library Book Policy

Sometimes library books creep away. It is a sad fact of life. Often they show up again months or years later, from under a rug or in the spare tire slot of your car. (Both true RES stories.) Sometimes they get damaged - eaten by the dog or chewed up by the mechanics in a treadmill. (Also true RES tales of woe.)

When your student's library book goes missing or gets damaged, please send your student in to the library with $25 to replace it if it is a hardcover, or $10 for a paperback. This fee includes costs associated with replacing the book with one that has a library binding, barcoding and digital MARC records.

Please make checks payable to SAU 50.

If you have any concerns, feel free to contact RES librarian Denise Wheeler atdwheeler@sau50.org.

Thanks!

About Mrs. Wheeler

Much of Denise Wheeler’s life revolves around stories. She has been a teaching librarian for more than two decades. Prior to that, she was an arts editor with five New England Press Association Awards. She continues to do freelance writing and is a contributing author to two books on Portsmouth’s history.

Ms. Wheeler is a grassroots community advocate, her most passionate cause being fighting to end childhood hunger, and her favorite flight of fancy work is with the Portsmouth Halloween Parade. She currently is a member of the Portsmouth400 Executive Team, planning the city's 400th anniversary celebrations.

She hopes to instill a sense of community pride and environmental stewardship in her RES students through annual field trips to Star Island, which is under the jurisdiction of Rye, and a walkathon through Odiorne Point.
