RYE ELEMENTARY SCHOOL ANNUAL REPORT

Dedicated to Learning - 2018

It is with great pleasure that I present to you the Annual Report of Rye Elementary School. Our mission states that at RES we strive to provide a safe, caring, supportive environment in which students are encouraged to acquire knowledge, skills, and attitudes necessary to become lifelong learners and responsible citizens. The staff, leadership, students and families take great pride in our school and work together to make RES a great place to accomplish these goals.

 

A primary goal is to increase the focus, depth, and rigor of learning and assessment tasks so students can engage with meaningful content and skills.  For two years our staff has been referencing research and looking at programs to support our literacy instruction. The overriding question is, “What makes a successful reader?” Last year we adopted a new word study program in kindergarten through grade two and have seen some amazing results.  This year those same grades are utilizing Fountas & Pinnell’s new Guided and Interactive Reading components in their literacy program, and grades three through five are moving to a more personalized approach with Lucy Calkin’s Units of Study in Reading.  Lucy Calkins is a reader’s workshop model and encourages student choice in what they read. Students are rigorously engaged with text. Rye Elementary has also implemented Project Based Learning this year to further increase student engagement and rigor across the curriculum. Project Based Learning takes a real world problem or question and students work together to solve it. This is an engaging form of learning that is multidisciplinary and covers many of the standards for each grade level. Some of those projects include Save the Estuaries in grade one, It Takes a Village in in Kindergarten, and Shark Tank in grade four.

 

We continue to develop responsible citizenship qualities in our children in many ways. Leading that commitment is our school-wide theme this year:  S.O.A.R. which stands for Show Respect, Be Outstanding Citizens, Accept Responsibility, and Rise to the Challenge. It is our hope that throughout this year and years to come Rye students will SOAR to great heights and be excited about learning. Our Student Council, comprised of five elected officers and nine appointed representatives, embrace many civic minded opportunities such as leading our student body to raise monies over the past school year to help other children in Puerto Rico after the devastation of Hurricane Maria.  We were pleased to be able to make a donation in the amount of three thousand seven hundred ninety nine dollars and four cents to a school in one community.  This effort was accomplished by bake sales, Mall in the Hall, and many individual fund raising efforts from students in every grade from selling handmade cards to lemonade stands.  Together the students at Rye Elementary are impacting the world.

Many people and organizations make a difference in the lives of Rye Elementary students. Rye Education Foundation awarded the elementary school grants which included, in part, nine KIBO robotics kits that combines coding and art design for our youngest learners, a Water Unit of Study which partnered grade three students with our own Rye Water District to learn more about water in the town of Rye, and the creation of a world map in our hallway drawn by the hands of grade three and five students.  Our award winning Parent Teacher Association continues to be actively involved and dedicated to our school community.  In 2018 they awarded numerous teacher grants and assemblies that would enrich our students such as TIGER from Plymouth State University, Katie Greer a Social Media Expert, and award winner author/illustrator Matt Taveres.  We also value a strong relationship between the Rye Public Library and visits from Lisa Houde, which continue to inspire our children to read.  Rye Recreation is a constant partner with us as they provide opportunities for students to extend their day at the school and offer a solution for parents on Early Release Days.  Finally, I would like to recognize the tireless efforts of our police and fire departments that answer many calls and provide programs that inform and teach our children about safety.  Together we are committed to making Rye Elementary a safe place for students.  There are many more volunteers in Rye and surrounding towns that impact our students.  We appreciate all of you, knowing that you help to make our school what it is today.

I would like to thank my fellow administrators in SAU 50 for their support, especially Marie Soucy and Meg Louney, who have worked closely with me to strengthen the education here in Rye.  I also would like to thank Mr. Salvatore Petralia, Kelli Killen, Amy Ransom, and Sarah Reinhardt from our central office, and the Rye School board for their leadership and vision for our community.  

Finally, I would like to thank the staff at RES who work tirelessly to provide a student-centered education for the children of Rye. As Malcolm X once said, “Education is the passport to the future, for tomorrow belongs to those who prepare for it today.”
